New Drive-Thru Acupuncture Visits

By Uncategorized
Breaking Thru

We understand that sometimes it may seem too difficult or even impossible to break through the pressures of staying healthy. But, there is a shining light at the end of the tunnel. There is so much going on right now and it important that we take the time to invest in our own health and well-being.

During this time, we want to ensure that we are able to provide care to our patients when they need it the most without compromising their time, health and well-being. We are starting a new program for our acupuncture patients, both new and current.

We will be providing a drive-thru acupuncture visit.

We want to be as transparent as possible, please review some basic questions about these visits:

What is “Drive-Thru Acupuncture?” Drive-Thru Acupuncture is a convenient way to impact the energy channels in our body by using one or more semi-permanent needles. These are inserted in the ear and can help with various health concerns.

What is a semi-permanent needle? These needles are “semi-permanent” meaning that they are designed to stay in your ear anywhere from three days to three weeks.

Is it safe? Is it sterile? The semi-permanent needles used are very small and are packaged individually in a sterile, one-time-use package.

Does it hurt? Semi-permanent needles tend to sting more than other forms of full-body acupuncture and the process is, therefore, less relaxing. This is the quick version and most people do experience pain upon insertion. This pain usually dissipates very quickly. About half of users experience continued tenderness if they press on the spot where the semi-permanent needle has been inserted. If you are a side-sleeper, you may choose to use the ear on the side on which you less frequently sleep. Many people find that the tenderness goes away almost immediately, or they are able to easily manage and maneuver pillows to keep from pushing directly on the spot.

Will you be able to see the needle? Does it look like a piercing? The needle is very tiny, but you can see it (with the right angles and mirrors on yourself). We put a sticker over the needle to help the needle stay in place.

What if it falls out? The needles are designed to be in your ear for as long as your body needs them. For some people, this means that the needle will be in place for as short as a few days. For most, the needle will stay in for about 2 weeks on its own. We put a small, latex-free sticker over the needle to help it keep in place. The more water, shampoo, and other products get onto the sticker, the quicker it will lose its stickiness and want to come out. This sticker is a beige color, so it blends in similar to an adhesive bandage.

What if the sticker falls out and the needle is still in? After the sticker falls off (or is pulled off), the needle is more likely to fall out on its own. We call these needles “no muss, no fuss” because they will come out on their own when your body is ready.

What if it stays in too long? If the needle has not fallen out on its own in 2-3 weeks, one of our providers will check the insertion point. The needle will either be pulled, or the location sanitized and a bandage applied again.

What are the risks? There is a small amount of pain involved in using “Drive-Thru Acupuncture.” Most patients feel that the pain is minimal enough, and the effect is great enough to make the risk worth it. There is a small risk for infection at the site of needle insertion. This is mitigated by using an alcohol swab to clean the site and checking on the needle if it stays three weeks. If you notice increasing pain, redness, or swelling of the site, please contact your provider.

What are the benefits? Acupuncture can help with a great number of health conditions. Right now, we are focusing on three main health concerns:  Pick from:
BOOST to give your immune system a helping hand
CHILL to ease anxiety and stress-related symptoms
BREATHE to support respiratory function.

How much does it cost? One needle for a Drive-Thru Acupuncture session is $35. Each additional needle is $20.

How long does it take? The actual insertion of the needle is very quick, less than five minutes for the whole thing. We can have you literally “drive-thru” to have this service performed. Please call our office when you arrive to let us know you’re here. We will do our best to get you in and out as quickly as possible based on our providers’ schedules. Depending on which ear we need to use, you may be asked to put your car in park, and step out of the vehicle briefly.

If you are experiencing a cough/fever, you may cancel your appointment with no cancellation fee. The doctors will provide a referral form for testing to any patient fitting the criteria for a virus.

We thank you for your dedication to your health and well-being and for choosing Breath of Life Wellness Center.

Our dedication is to provide services and care to improve your daily active living.

Connection Between Pregnancy and Chiropractic Care

By Uncategorized
Mom to be

We elevate mind and body to live your best life.

Pregnancy comes with both physical and emotional changes each and every day. At times it may feel a little overwhelming. However, it is important to listen to your heart, your body, and your baby.

Now, there are a lot of clichés or “norms” that mothers have to just “deal” with, which is simply not always true. Chiropractic care is ensuring the connection between the body and the brain is in sync with each other which enables you to have the best quality of life.

At Breath of Life, we believe in transparency and honesty and we want to provide you with as much information as possible. Here are some common questions asked by our mom-to-be patients and answered by our doctors.

  1. How can my baby benefit from me being seen by a chiropractor during pregnancy? mean?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help mom as her body is adapting to the changes in the prenatal period. By helping maintain and supporting mom’s spine and nervous system, we are – through mom – indirectly affecting the baby’s body. The smooth flow of information between mom’s brain and every cell, tissue, and organ in her body is necessary for the development of the little one growing inside.

Another benefit of chiropractic care is giving the baby the room they need to grow. Keeping mom’s pelvic bones aligned allows for the removal of any undue tension on the uterus. When the uterus can move and shift as it does naturally, the baby can also move, shift, and grow without constraints.
  2. Is it safe and how often could I see my chiropractor while pregnant?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is only safe when there is a trained and licensed physician supervising or administrating the care for the mother and baby. Our Dr. Nicole is the only pediatric and perinatal chiropractor within 250 miles of Springfield, Missouri. She has led two innovative pediatric and perinatal focused practices, during her career.

“For me, investing my time, education and expertise on pediatric and perinatal patients brings me the most satisfaction,” says Dr. Nicole McCauley.

We understand how important comfort and safety are for mom and baby during this special time of life. When chiropractic adjustments are delivered by a trained chiropractic physician, both mother and baby are in good hands! In our office, we use special pregnancy pillows to allow mom’s changing body and belly to fit well and to be comfortable during the adjustment. We also use low force adjusting techniques that are gentle and effective.

The frequency of chiropractic care during pregnancy can vary for each momma, which is why at Breath of Life we co-create a plan for each and every patient based on their specific needs.

Because changes can happen on a frequent and unexpected basis, we would prefer to see our moms once every two weeks during the first two trimesters. For the last trimester, it is usually advised to be seen once per week. Your course of care will be unique to what your body and your baby’s body need.
  3. Can anything help with my pregnancy challenges (morning sickness, acid reflux, hormones, posture shift, etc)?
There are many challenges that can come along with pregnancy. But, just because these challenges are “common” this does not mean that they are “normal.” The aim and goal of chiropractic care is to remove any places of nerve interference in the body. We focus on the spine as this houses the roadway of information going to and from the brain and to and from every cell of the body. As we remove the obstacles to this information flow, many challenges can be diminished or even completely resolved.

When we strive for structural balance in mom’s body, we are also allowing for better functions. While not a silver bullet, for many expecting moms, chiropractic care can help ease or eliminate morning sickness. This is done by allowing the body to find the optimal balance of hormones during the natural shifts that occur during pregnancy.

The change in the position of the stomach as the baby grows often leads to acid reflux or “heartburn.” Small and gentle adjustments to the abdomen can guide the stomach into the correct position and help keep stomach acid where it belongs.

“This is a topic and practice that is near and dear to our hearts. Seeing the bonds form between moms and their babies, gives us great joy,” mentions Dr. Katie Donovan.

There are plenty of questions to be asked with plenty of answers. We encourage you to think about how you can be at your best not just for your baby but for yourself as well. At Breath of Life we want to elevate your mind and body to live your best life.

Introducing the Natural Birth Plan

By Uncategorized

When it comes to giving birth there are so many methods, techniques, experts, philosophies, and practices. We admit, it can be a little overwhelming and sometimes scary. We want you to make the best decision possible for you and your baby. The bond between a mother and her baby is unbreakable. We have some really important questions we want you to consider when creating your birthing plan.

What is going to give you the greatest chance to form the best bond with your baby? What is going to give you the most fulfillment?

At Breath of Life, we want to elevate your mind and body to live your best life. Here is some introductory information about the practice of natural birthing. This is only a glimpse into this method, we highly recommend you schedule an appointment with us or attend our free informational meeting on Thursday, February 20, 2020, see below for more info.

Here are some basic questions and our answers to a natural birth plan:

  1. What does having a natural birth mean?
Natural birth is a way of honoring the mother’s body and its designed ability to birth a child with little to no intervention. During a natural birth, the midwife or doctor listens and intently pays very close attention to the signals given by mom’s body. The signals may tell the midwife/Dr. when to enter labor and when the baby is ready to be delivered.
  2. How can a natural birth benefit the mother and baby?
When we allow mom and baby to communicate and interfere as little as possible in the labor and delivery process we see better birth outcomes. This includes quicker healing time for mom, smoother transition from womb to outside-of-womb for baby, and a decreased likelihood for birth trauma for both mom and baby.
  3. How can epidurals affect my pregnancy?
Epidurals are used to decrease pain during labor and delivery. However, the short-term relief might not outweigh the risks or connection. While an epidural removes pain from labor and delivery, it also removes mom’s ability to feel and to react to her body’s normal progression of labor. Labor is frequently stalled because of epidurals and is directly associated with a decrease in bonding between mom and baby and the latching or nursing success rates.

As we mentioned earlier there are so many things to talk about when it comes to a natural birth plan. We want you to be as informed as possible when it comes to your mind, body, and loved ones.

If you are still interested in learning about creating a natural birth plan we would like to invite you to our free community-focused event with our friends and neighbors from Loehr Health Center.

This event will take place on February 20th at 11:00 am at Travellers House (824 S. National Ave.), here is a link to our Facebook event with all the information you would need, by the way, we will have free childcare.

Creating a Health Plan for 2020

By Uncategorized

A SMART health plan is more important than any diet or exercise routine, it is a list of strategies that come together to achieve your goal(s). However, there is a key ingredient.

SMART Strategies
S=Specific M=Measurable A=Attainable R=Relevant T=Time-Based

Take these principles into consideration when creating your health plan. This approach can be tailored to any lifestyle and or any aspect of your life.

What does it mean to be specific when creating a health plan?
You should have a general idea of what you would like to achieve. What does winning look like to you, not what you saw on Pinterest or Instagram? Remember, that it takes a single step to complete or win a race.

How can a strategy be measurable in a health plan?
Everything we do has a result or an outcome, we determine whether or not it is the result we want or don’t want. Some goals can be measured by a number (weight, waistline, etc.) and others can be measured by our energy for the day or our happiness.

What does an attainable health plan strategy mean?
Health plans may fail because we don’t see the immediate result. While it is important to set goals it is just as important if not more important to set attainable milestones or small reachable goals that may work towards a bigger goal, in the end, remember one step at a time.

How can a strategy be relevant?
When we talk about relevant strategies we are talking about goals that are in the here and now. It is nice to have big goals that will take a considerable amount of time but it is best for our mental capacity to have goals and strategies that are achievable in the short-term.

Why do you need time-based strategies for a health plan?
Set realistic and achievable goals that are married to time so that you know you are working towards is achievable and attainable in a realistic but timely manner.

What is the “key-ingredient?”
The key-ingredient is the holistic approach to change. Many of the DIY health plans miss this approach. We have to know exactly what our bodies are telling us during these times of change.

At Breathe of Life, our approach is exactly that, we listen to the body. We know that if one area is not in alignment the rest of the body is overworking to compensate for that miscue.

Your time at BOL is met with SMART strategies. We listen to you and what your body needs to be at its best. We co-create a plan for every patient to help them live the best life possible. We do not create plans for the masses we create plans for the individual.

We would love to share this process with you. If you would like to set up a casual phone call to learn about Breathe of Life we would be happy to hear from you.

Breaking Down the Barriers About CSA

By Uncategorized

CSA is a technique and tool we use to better understand our patients. Our practice is highly focused on the individual and each individual requires something unique.

First, what is CSA? Computerized Electrodermal-Stress Analysis (CSA), is a technique and tool that shows us what systems in the body are in-balance, out-of-balance and what the body wants to do to get back to balance so it can begin to heal itself. At Breath of Life, we stay away from “one-size-fits-all” solutions and this analysis tells us exactly what the body needs.

Here are some common questions about CSA:

Can I take this test if I am pregnant? Yes. The results may offer a more detailed look at the nutritional needs of body’s change from pregnancy. Any potential detox that may present, will be put on hold until after the mother has finished breastfeeding.
How long will the analysis take? An initial visit with the doctor is one hour and any follow-up or re-evaluations are scheduled for 30 minutes.
How specific is the test? The CSA uses electrical frequencies to evaluate the body. Because of this, some imbalances can be identified that might not yet show up in regular blood work.
How often should I schedule a CSA analysis?
How often should I schedule a CSA analysis? Each evaluation identifies how long the tailored protocol should be followed and if/when to return for a re-evaluation.

Curious to see exactly how the CSA test is administrated?
Also, view a testimonial from a current patient and how they have benefited from CSA testing.

How Financial Investments Can Elevate Mind & Body

By Uncategorized

Did you know that you can take advantage of something you’re already investing in?

Your financial investments can now contribute directly to your complete wellness.

If you still have funds available in your HSA or FSA or if you want to know what an FSA or HSA is, then you should keep reading.

You may have opened a health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) when you started your new job or was directed to do so by your financial advisor. These special savings accounts can help save money for healthcare expenses and save money on your taxes.

What are these accounts?

Health Savings Account (HSA):

A health savings account is usually set up through your bank, your healthcare provider, or your employer. Three important factors in being eligible for an HSA are:

  1. Enrollment in a high-deductible health plan (HDHP)
  2. NOT being enrolled in Medicare
  3. NOT being a dependent on another person’s tax return

*Funds left in your HSA at the end of the year will roll over and can be used the following calendar year.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA):

A flexible spending account is set up and managed by your employer and does NOT require enrollment in a health plan, making it more accessible to employees.

*Funds left in your FSA at the end of the year will NOT be rolled over and will GO BACK TO YOUR EMPLOYER, making them inaccessible to you. This is where you can cash in on your previous decision to invest in your health, and come to Breath of Life for any chiropractic care you’ve been meaning to take advantage of.

What does this mean for me?

Chiropractic services are now “qualified medical expenses,” for an HSA and are also coved by a “standard FSA.”

This means that your annual invests can now directly be contributed to your health and well-being.

If you have specific questions about your HSA or FSA we recommend that you speak with your benefits/human resources department.

If you have specific questions about total mind and body care or how you can invest in you living your best life we recommend you speak to us.

Remember it is ok, to invest in yourself. You give so much to others and now you deserve the opportunity to live your best life.
