We elevate mind and body to live your best life.

Pregnancy comes with both physical and emotional changes each and every day. At times it may feel a little overwhelming. However, it is important to listen to your heart, your body, and your baby.

Now, there are a lot of clichés or “norms” that mothers have to just “deal” with, which is simply not always true. Chiropractic care is ensuring the connection between the body and the brain is in sync with each other which enables you to have the best quality of life.

At Breath of Life, we believe in transparency and honesty and we want to provide you with as much information as possible. Here are some common questions asked by our mom-to-be patients and answered by our doctors.

  1. What does having a natural Can my baby benefit from me being seen by a chiropractor during pregnancy? mean?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help mom as her body is adapting to the changes in the prenatal period. By helping maintain and supporting mom’s spine and nervous system, we are – through mom – indirectly affecting the baby’s body. The smooth flow of information between mom’s brain and every cell, tissue, and organ in her body is necessary for the development of the little one growing inside.

Another benefit of chiropractic care is giving the baby the room they need to grow. Keeping mom’s pelvic bones aligned allows for the removal of any undue tension on the uterus. When the uterus can move and shift as it does naturally, the baby can also move, shift, and grow without constraints.
  2. Is it safe and how often could I see my chiropractor while pregnant?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is only safe when there is a trained and licensed physician supervising or administrating the care for the mother and baby. Our Dr. Nicole is the only pediatric and perinatal chiropractor within 250 miles of Springfield, Missouri. She has led two innovative pediatric and perinatal focused practices, during her career.

“For me, investing my time, education and expertise on pediatric and perinatal patients brings me the most satisfaction,” says Dr. Nicole McCauley.

We understand how important comfort and safety are for mom and baby during this special time of life. When chiropractic adjustments are delivered by a trained chiropractic physician, both mother and baby are in good hands! In our office, we use special pregnancy pillows to allow mom’s changing body and belly to fit well and to be comfortable during the adjustment. We also use low force adjusting techniques that are gentle and effective.

The frequency of chiropractic care during pregnancy can vary for each momma, which is why at Breath of Life we co-create a plan for each and every patient based on their specific needs.

Because changes can happen on a frequent and unexpected basis, we would prefer to see our moms once every two weeks during the first two trimesters. For the last trimester, it is usually advised to be seen once per week. Your course of care will be unique to what your body and your baby’s body need.
  3. Can anything help with my pregnancy challenges (morning sickness, acid reflux, hormones, posture shift, etc)?
There are many challenges that can come along with pregnancy. But, just because these challenges are “common” this does not mean that they are “normal.” The aim and goal of chiropractic care is to remove any places of nerve interference in the body. We focus on the spine as this houses the roadway of information going to and from the brain and to and from every cell of the body. As we remove the obstacles to this information flow, many challenges can be diminished or even completely resolved.

When we strive for structural balance in mom’s body, we are also allowing for better functions. While not a silver bullet, for many expecting moms, chiropractic care can help ease or eliminate morning sickness. This is done by allowing the body to find the optimal balance of hormones during the natural shifts that occur during pregnancy.

The change in the position of the stomach as the baby grows often leads to acid reflux or “heartburn.” Small and gentle adjustments to the abdomen can guide the stomach into the correct position and help keep stomach acid where it belongs.

“This is a topic and practice that is near and dear to our hearts. Seeing the bonds form between moms and their babies, gives us great joy,” mentions Dr. Katie Donovan.

There are plenty of questions to be asked with plenty of answers. We encourage you to think about how you can be at your best not just for your baby but for yourself as well. At Breath of Life we want to elevate your mind and body to live your best life.
